Lifelong Learning and Skills: Ideal and Reality


On 2nd December, the National Learning Forum is hosting a debate on the ideal and the reality of lifelong learning and skills in England and where the needs still lie.

 

Can government initiatives in lifelong learning really increase social inclusion? The Campaign for Learning is hosting a National Learning Forum to debate the ideal and the reality of lifelong learning and skills in England and where the needs still lie. Speakers will include:

  1. Professor Bob Fryer, National Director For Widening Participation In Learning, Department of Health
  2. Simon Bartley, Chief Executive, UK Skills
  3. Tricia Hartley, Chief Executive, Campaign for Learning

Questions that the forum will address will include:

  1. What is lifelong learning and skills?
  2. What are the implications of the economic downturn for initiatives that rely on a strong economy e.g. Apprenticeships, Train to Gain, higher level learning, support for the proposed new entitlement for employees under 18, and the right to request time off to train?
  3. Will skills accounts succeed in tapping employee demand?
  4. What is the role of informal learning in the lifelong learning arena?
