The DCSF launches a consultation on the impartial careers education statutory guidance
The Education and Skills Act 2008 requires schools to have regard to guidance issued by the Secretary of State when complying with their careers education and guidance duties. This consultation invites stakeholders to comment on the draft guidance. Stakeholders have until 30 July 2009 to comment on the draft guidance.

Action Plan for the 14-19 Prospectus and CAP
From 2011 at the latest, young people in year 11 should be able to find out online what opportunities are on offer and apply for them through the same online resource. This is the vision set out in the Action Plan for the 14-19 Prospectus and Common Application Process (CAP).

September Guarantee reminders
Year 11 students will be leaving school shortly, and both they, and their parents/carers, need to know who to contact for information, advice and guidance about getting an offer of a suitable place in post-16 education or training under the September Guarantee. Schools should ensure that arrangements are in place, and that they are communicated to Year 11 leavers and their parents and carers, either in their end of term letter or by other means.

Connexions Direct Website
The Connexions Direct website allows young people aged 13-19 in England to access up to date, impartial information, on a range of teen issues, using media with which they are familiar, at a time of their choosing. This includes interactive and video presentations (CXDi), peer to peer comments, the Jobs4U careers database and online interactive versions of the It’s Your Choice and Which Way Now publications.

Review of Careers Wales
The first phase of the review of careers services in Wales has now been completed. It is part of the Welsh Assembly Government’s ‘Skills that Work for Wales’ strategy and action plan. The next phase is to develop the vision of a world-class, professionally-led, integrated system of careers education, information, advice and guidance, catering for all ages and all abilities.

Drivers and Barriers to Educational Success - Evidence from the Longitudinal Study of Young People in England
This study examined why young people from poor families have lower attainment in school, are more likely to become NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training) after compulsory education, and are more likely to participate in a range of risky behaviours whilst teenagers.

DCSF: Activity Agreement Pilots report
The Activity Agreements (AA) Pilots were launched in April 2006 in eight areas of England. AA was an initiative aimed at testing the effectiveness of conditional financial incentives along with intensive support and brokerage of tailored activities in re-engaging young people aged 16 -17 who had been NEET for at least 20 weeks.

Girls into Physics - Action Research
The Girls into Physics action research programme arose from a desire to share information on successful teaching and learning strategies to engage girls with physics.
