Careers co-ordinators in schools

DCSF have commissioned NFER, in association with NICEC/CRAC, to carry out research into the training needs of careers co-ordinators with a view to developing a new national professional qualification which will meet their needs.

NFER is leading an eight-month research project which will look into the professional development needs of careers co-ordinators in schools. ‘The research is in three strands’, Marian Morris, project leader, explains. ‘Firstly, we will find out more about the existing qualifications market by talking to HEIs and other stakeholders about the nature and range of current provision. We will follow this up with a small number of in-depth case studies to ascertain the current status and models of delivery of CEG in schools. The third strand is a survey of 3000 school careers co-ordinators to ascertain the possible nature and scale of demand for a new national professional qualification.’

Already, ACEG and ICG have offered to help. ‘We hope that as many schools as possible, and their advisers, will also support the project by filling in surveys and agreeing to be case studies’, commented Marian.
